The contract, which was approved by the SFMTA's Board of Supervisors, is for five years and has an additional five-year option. Phase II construction is expected to begin during 2010 with service to the public starting during 2016. Once this phase is complete, the subway will extend from AT&T Park to North Beach, passing under San Francisco's famous Chinatown. Phase III of the project is expected to take the subway through North Beach to Fisherman's Wharf.
